Why the app was created
While working with children who have difficulty in the early years Mary soon realised the importance of building a bank of words for each child in order for them to read and write automatically. Many of the 100 most common words used in English are words that need to be learnt by sight. There are many ways of learning these words but Mary was looking for a quick and easy way for children to learn these words at an individual pace. She discovered many apps that helped children to practise reading these words but none that recognised the most important practice of writing these words. She decided to use a tried and true method LSCWC within an app. MOST importantly Mary wanted children to work at their own pace and to have the ability to personalise lists in order to work on words that were relevant to them and their individual needs. Spelling Heroes was created!
Personal philosophy. What I believe
My teaching philosophy is simple
I believe we are all learners and all children can be successful no matter what stage of development they may be at. It is important to always focus on what the child already CAN do and build on these skills. The children need to see they have made progress, as this builds confidence within them and encourages them to continue to the next level. Time and time again I have seen children develop a self belief and their skills and strategies quickly improve. We should set small, achievable goals with our children and as they achieve these goals we can work with them to continue to the next stage. We need to give the children ownership of their learning so they can take responsibility and understand that the possibilities are endless. Children become independent learners with an ability to solve problems and a confidence to achieve whatever they may aspire to.
